A SALTY SALTY TEA BAG for the PEPPER

On behalf of the Red Pepper Chronicle let me apologize for the delayed report of the Red Pepper vs Old Balls game. With the excessive drinking after the game and turkey eating weekend it was hard to track down anyone for comments.

Last Wednesday the RP squad had a great early season test. Not only were they playing old balls and trying not to get tea bagged again, but this was going to be a great test for the RP squad to see how they play position. Well once again old balls put on a clinic of old men playing a fast game in slow motion. Old balls has a great way of slowing the game down and just passing the puck around. Finding the old guy limping down the wing and giving him a nice tape to tape pass and letting him crawl into the zone and find the high guy in the slot and score. "its a great thing to watch, all of these old men out here who can barley make it down the ice be able to play the game they love" said coach Tellmann. "there is no other way for us to play, i can't even skate, so i need to be able to hit an open guy, get to the bench and have coach kaulk give me some oxygen" said Schafer of old balls. "a team that plays great position will always beat a team that runs around, and that is what we do, we run around and give up 3-1's on a regular basis" said a disgusted nepple "i feel sorry for wilson"

That is what happened old balls came out and played great position and beat the pep 8-7. "The game wasn't that close but we made it respectable at the end so the saltiness of the tea bag wouldn't be that bad" said tofte

WESTY & SCHAFER TALKIN SMACK

At an undisclosed resturant at an undisclosed time and date, captain (schafer) and co-caption (westy) of old balls were heard talkin smack. They said "the only win we will get this year is against the Red Pepper". Now this really throws their team under the buss but it really shows lack of respect for the pepper. "i couldn't believe when i heard this, i serve them grinders and whatever they want on a weekly basis, with a smile and then they treat the pepper squad like this.......pisses me right off" said nepple "oh ya......and they never tip me either.....old fuggers" Obviously nepple is heated, but tellmann took a different approach. He asked westy about this comment and westy said "ah....um.....blah......da......sooooo.......shhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh.....son of a..........." his dentures then flew out and he started to shake. With this reaction tellmann knew the comment was true. "its pretty obvious they think they are better than us, that's OK...they are old and senile and forget what they say half the time so i will forgive them" said tellmann.

COACH TELLMANN GETS THE GOAL FOR THE W

The night started off slow again for the pepper. With the game at 3-0 in the middle of the first the pepper knew they had to do something to keep it close. So nepple took a rebound and sniped on the goalie to put the pep on the board. But Overtime came back and made it 4-1 before the first ended.

the second didn't really start out the way the pepper wanted it. Nick Fuhr started to take over the game with ridiculous toe drags to saucer passes for goals. But the pepper figured this out really quick. "There is two ways to stop the Fuhr toe drag 1. use a crafty poke check 2. Grab his shoulder pads (yes nick wears shoulder pads, don't know why but he does)" said Tom Bryan. So after the Fuhr show was over the Tommy Bryan show started. You see tommy b is a great hockey player, tall, skinny, great reach. So this makes for a great D man. He is like the Willie Mitchel of Mens League, a very defensive d man....which is great for the pep. so when Tommy B gets a chance to score he takes advantage. With the pepper down by a few and the second coming to a close tom bryan got a great pass from (i forgot the stats sheet so don't remember who passed it to him) and went in all alone. Tommy gave the patented triple Deek and was able to tap in a nice back hand to get the pepper to 6-3 and more importantly a huge boost for the third.

The third period couldn't have started off any better for the pepper. The first shift they get it to 6-5 with goals by tofte and bydal. Then sprehe got it too 6-6 with a twisted wrister from the slot....BUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUT he gave it back when he skated off the ice didnt tell anyone and the pepper was playing with 4 guys and ovetrtime came in and scored on a three on one. "i thought it felt a little weird back there" was the comment from Tommy B when he got back to the bench and realized he was the only D man on the ice for that goal. The game got to 8-7 and with 45 secs left sprehe TOTALLY REDEEMED HIMSELF with a goal to tie it up. "i let my team down earlier so i knew i had to make a play" said sprehe.

So once again the pepper fought back and went to a shoot out. After the first 3 guys went we were still tied. It went all the way to the 6th shooter and this is when the the coaching move of the year came out. Lindgren skated over to Tellmann and said "go down and shoot low stick side" At this point tellmann had his helmet off sticks and gloves in the bench and had no intention too shoot. "i dont usually shoot in shoot outs, i am a hard nosed player who just tries to get the puck to the net. 5 minutes before the shoot out bydal said to me to... shoot low for a rebound and i said to him....i don't aim my shots they just go" said tellmann. So with tellmann going to the net, bydal is sitting their thinking in the back of his mind..he doesn't aim his shots...but tellmann aimed this one and went low glove side and buried it for a goal, making lindgren a coaching genius. Martienson stoned rosty and the pepper got the first win on the year.

After the second "I told the guys we had a tuff road ahead, we were down by 3 and had a short bench but i told the team....hay we have been here before... and like a fat kid looking at cake my teams eyes lite up and i could tell they were ready to play so i knew we were going to be fine....it was good to get this win tonight" said tellmann.

LINDGREN CARRIES THE PEPPER WITH 4 GNOTES

The season didn't start out the best for the pepper last night. The young team of speedy signs came out and hung 5 in the first to give them a 5-0 lead going into the second. "Nepple and I were really close to pulling wilson and sending him back to the California inline league, and put our back up goalie joe bryan in, but we decide to stick it out and that was the right decision" said tellmann after the game. With a positive speech, from jimmy rich, between periods lindgren put the pep on the board early with a pair of goals from sprehe and J. Smitty. "i was just trying to get open and sprehe hit me with to backdoor passes" lindgren said. But good old lindgren wasn't done there. Like he does for Sioux home games, (he is the lamp lighter at sioux home games), he lit the lamp again in the second making the game 5-3 going into the third. "it was huge for us to get the game close and get on the board, lindgren was able to get us right back in the game...this is why bethke signed him to a 10 yr 3 grinder a week contract to keep him around, we cant lose a guy like that" said nepple.

The third period started off good for the pep. Going hard to the net and getting good chances but were unable to capitalize. With 10 min left in the 3rd tofte gave bydal a glorious saucer pass tape to tape and bydal was able to score. "that pass was unreal, i couldn't believe it, one of the better passes in pepper hockey history....if bydal didn't score on that he would have sat the rest of the game"said coach tellmann. For the next 8 minutes there was a lot of neutral zone play but with 1 minute remaining wilson was pulled and "hot stick" lindgren was sent onto the ice. Lindgern got a great pass from tellmann off the boards and shelved a twister wrister over the glove of the goalie. "this is a great night for me, i worked really hard with burgraff on my skating and shooting this summer it is great to see all of that time paying off" said lindgren

Game went to a shoot out and pepper lost, but the game was good for the pep. "i was proud of the team tonight, great way to start the season. Would have liked to have the W but they will come" said tofte

Quote/Action of the night:
Our new free agent, Kilgore, is so talented he plays on two teams. Well after his first game he came into our locker room with his bag, stick, and one busch light can on top of another. Tofte was impressed to say the least. After the game we get into the locker room and kilgore says "what this team doesnt bring beer" (we forgot beer last night). Then he took off his gear and said "papa bear is getting fat, mamma bear might need to say...hay quit eating". then he showered and went to the bar......great first night for our new free agent.

SEASON OPEANER

The Red Pepper opens up the 06-07 season at the BLC at 8:30 against Speedy Signs. Speedy better be careful the BLC is perfect for the red pepper trap...just ask the Roco they were 0-2 against the trap in the BLC in the 05-06 season. The following are keys to success for the year of 06-07.

1. Defense, Defense, Defense......No more 3-0 for the other team 9 times in a game everygame. The addition of Kilgore with his leadership and talent should help this problem. Forwards can't just skate one way either, the ice doenst go up hill on the way back to our defensive zone.

2. Breakouts...The pepper has been working with the gate to learn there patented "old balls" breakout of spreading the ice and passing the puck..it is a simple but hard concept for the pepper to learn. Last week there was some attempts in live action and we almost had to IR half the team becasue we kept running into each other. Like i have said before we are a bunch of never wases.....

3. Need to be "try hards"...........if nothing else this will really piss of the roco

4. Drink some beers and eat grinders after the game, will bulk you up for those tuff encounters with morqway (no idea how to spell his name) or you can just turtle like i did....that is the more manly approach

FREE AGENT SIGNING

With the season around the corner Rob Bethke, GM, called with good news to coach tellman on Monday. "we got him" bethke said to tellmann. Him is Kelly Kilgore, GF Central stand out and UMC Crookston All Star. "Last year after the season I told my team i will become a free agent, I wanted to come to the pepper but wanted to see how many free grinders i could get for signing." my agent bydal called me monday and said two free a week, one for him and one for me, so i said sign me up....i could eat more pepper" kilgore said. "we are excited to have him, he will solidify our blue line and bring the leadership we were lackin last year. He is going to have the A on his sweater for a reason. his experience along with hard work will be great for our other D to see." commented assitant coach neppel.

Kilgores career ended after crookston because he decided to get married and have kids, but with the recent addition to the fam he thinks he needs to look for a new line of work. " i saw skarperud go from the pepper to UND so i figured i would try go from the pepper to the AHL and hopefully the show. I cant go to UND since all of my eligibility was used up 22 miles away, so the show is my only choice" said kilgore "im excited he still has the drive to try and get to the N, he might have missed his window but with hard work and determination he could make it" said tellmann. "he is going to be a great addition, I play softball with him and he is a rock at 3rd, so i figured he would be a great addition to our team, i called bethke and coach and said they should take a look, so they drove to the penal league championship in brookings, SD....kilgore was serving 6 months for stealing little debbies from the loaf and jug....and they liked what they saw" bydal said "it will be great to catch nice tape to tape saucer passes for breakaways"

With wilson in the net and kilgore on the blue line it sounds like the pepper has made some great improvements this year. Season opener is next week, looks good on paper we just need to be "try hards" to make everyone believers.

WILSON IS BACK IN THE NETS FOR THE PEP

After a year of inline hockey in California Wilson has come back to his roots to strap on the ice skates for the Red Pepper. "i saw the success of oshie after he played inline hockey so i figured i would give it a try and see if i could make it to the sioux, but it didnt work out, i missed the grinders from the pepper to much" wilson said. "its good to have him back, he is a solid goalie and will really give him a chance to win" said coach tellmann.

After watching wilson in the pre-season games, he has been looking solid. The cali inline game looks to really have improved his game. With one more week of pre-season the pepper looks to cut a few guys and start putting the lines together.
